Wardrobe for Film

Visually capturing an audience and telling a story through the use of costume is an intricately layered process. The importance of continuity and an overarching mindfulness for the artistic direction are at the forefront of all of my film styling endeavors.

As in real life, the decisions a wardrobe or costume designer chooses can all have an impact on the audience and the overarching mood of a film. The colours, tones, prints, silhouettes, and overall style of each garment can resonate with the audience, subtly altering their emotions as they absorb the visual cues layered within the production.

There is usually a focal point, progression, or arch that I build a wardrobe around as an additional method of storytelling. Throughout “In the Deep,” Jodi’s, played by Orsy Szabo, emotional and physical battle with illness utilizes a lack of colour during her times of heightened sickness. During scenes where the intention  is to focus on themes of life and strength, pops of bright colour are used in conjunction with more modern , fashion forward pieces. This is juxtaposed beside her father, played by Allan Harmon, who has been stuck in a rut since the passing of his wife. As the story progresses, Jodi’s father decides to take hold of the life he has left; this is showcased through an updated look with a clean cut appearance. These are an example of the multitude of ways, both discrete and obvious that a wardrobe designer can pull from up his or her sleeve!
